Should I Have Hair Transplantation Before Or After My Facial Surgery?

Q: Dr. Eppley, I wanted to know if I were to get a hair transplant in the same month as these skull and facial surgeries we were planning, would it be better to get that before or after these other surgeries? Or does it not matter? I figured the incisions would be in mostly different places but I wanted to make sure.

A: When it comes to hair transplantation, that causes by itself a lot of facial swelling and the nature of the hair rafts are tenuous early after the procedure. Thus the prudent approach is to separate these procedures by three months apart of which I would do the hair transplants as the second stage to ensure they are to disrupted by anything from the facial and temporal procedures. They definitely should not be done so close together…that is not good for the best results of either procedure.
