Is A Skull Implant For The Treatment of Plagiocephaly Safe?

Q: Dr. Eppley, I found your web site by chance while I was searching for medical treatment regarding Plagiocephaly, I was just thinking to resolve the problem once for all as it is disturbs  me all the time, so I wanted to  pose some questions:

How much it would cost roughly, more or less,  the surgery of occipital surgery for the flathead for not US citizens?

How much time it is needed for treatment? (surgery plus recovery)?

Is it safe procedure or there might be some collateral damage?

thanks in advance!

A: Thank you for your inquiry. In answer to your plagiocephaly questions:

1) The most common treatment for lagiocephaly is a custom occipital implant for the flat side of the back of the head. I assume this is your concern as well.

2) Such custom occipital skull implant surgery takes 90 minutes to perform. The implant is preoperatively designed from a 3D CT scat of the patient six weeks before their surgery. Recovery is fairly short in the 10 day to 2 week period until one is back to all normal activities.

3) My assistant Camille will pass along the cost of the surgery to you.

4) This is a very safe procedure as the implant sits on top of the skull bone under the scalp.
