Can My Sliding Genioplasty Be Reversed Since It Made My Face Too Long?

Q: Dr. Eppley, I would like to have a consultation to reverse my genioplasty. I believe my face is too long now.

A: Your sliding genioplasty can certainly be partially or totally reversed. My questions would be:

1) How long ago was your genioplasty procedure?

2) What type of movements were done? (e.g., how far forward was it moved?)

3) Do you have any postop x-rays?

4) If vertical length is the issue but not the amount of horizontal projection then the vertical length may only need to be changed.

The point of #4 is I would be careful about fully reversing a sliding genioplasty as the chin is not going to return completely to what it was before the surgery. There are going to be some changes that will be the result of the stretched tissues. (e.g., increased submental fullness) As there was a reason you had the original surgery I would think about keeping the benefits and eliminating the liabilities. (vertical length)
