Can I Get A Sliding Genioplasty Now And Have Jaw Surgery Later?

Q: Dr. Eppley, I have a slightly recessed jaw and chin. I might get jaw surgery in the future but I can’t afford it right now. I was wondering 1. Are chin implants and genioplasty the only surgeries for chin you offer? 2. Could I get a genioplasty and then get jaw surgery in the future? 3. I have just discovered chin fillers, and was wondering if they could make your chin wider or do they only increase project?

I could tell by comparing pictures and looking at other results online I would only need one syringe for a chin filler. What I am worried about is my chin looking too narrow after a filler, so I was wondering if they could increase width or do they only increase projection.

A: Thank you for your inquiry. In answer to your questions:

1) The available chin augmentation procedures include synthetic fillers, fat injections, implants and osteotomies. (sliding genioplasty)

2) A bony genioplasty deos not preclude jaw surgery in the future…although that depends on how much the chin is moved forward and how much the lower jaw needs to be moved later.

3) Injectable fillers can create any chin dimensional change…if you use enough filler volume. It is fair to say that both increased horizontal projection and chin width will likely require more than one syringe of filler.
