Am I Too Old For Testicle Implant Surgery?

Q: Dr. Eppley, Married have undescended testicle on left side since birth (of course)… Always wanted testicle implant, soft silicone version but just never felt secure with all that’s required in travel, recovery and cost, just too many unknowns. Live in Platte City, Missouri about 10 miles north of airport. Am retired now so possibly better time to get this for me as I might be able to find the time at your convenience? Only have few questions, pic attached. I’m told by my female physician the real testicle on the right side is somewhat larger than normal. I guess that could be true? I have 4 boys, the youngest still lives with me as he is chronically ill so needs help often.

Questions: 1) Does the attached picture help you diagnose whether a successful implant could be achieved? 2) How long would I have to be at your clinic and how long after would I have to stay before returning home? Note: My only allergy is Cephalexin I took years when I was circumcised and once again later with an infection. 3) Am I too old for this now?

A: Thank you for your inquiry and sending your picture to which I can make the following comments:

1) You are only too old from the surgery when you determine that you are too old for the surgery (don’t need or want it)

2) I can’t tell much from the picture size but I would make the assumption that a 4.5 or 5.0 cm standard ultra soft silicone testicle implant should suffice.

3) This is outpatient surgery and no sutures are placed that need to be removed. Therefore, you should be able to go home quite quickly. If you were coming by yourself that would mean the following day. if you had someone with you, you could literally be driven home right after the surgery.
