Q: Dr. Eppley, I want to make enquiries about skull reduction or occipital reconstruction cause I’m interested in it.
A: Thank you for your inquiry and sending your picture. In skull reduction surgery the most common request is for the back of the head reduction. The success of back of the head skull reduction is based on the thickness of the bone and how much reduction the patient can be expected to achieve. The only way to know this accurately is to get a 3-D CT scan and measure the thickness of the bone. Then we will know how much reduction can be achieved by removal of the outer cortical layer of the skull bone, which is safe to remove.
