Scar Revision Post-Op Recovery Instructions

1. Most excisional scar revisions will be covered by glued-on flesh colored tapes. They require no care.


2. In some facial scar revisions, the suture line may be left open. Apply a light layer of antibiotic ointment to them three times a day.


3. One may shower and get the sutures or tapes wet the very next day. There is no infection risk to getting the scar revision area wet.


4. Sutures in the face and neck will be removed 6 or 7 days after surgery. Sutures in the scalp and body will be removed around 10 to 14 days after surgery.


5. For those scar revisions done by laser resurfacing, they will usually only be dressed with antibiotic ointment. Do not let the lasered skin get dry or form a scab. They should be moisturized just enough to prevent this from occurring. Antibiotic ointment will only need to be used for one week, thereafter change to a skin moisturizer.


6. It is important to keep the scar revision area from being excessively exposed to the sun in the first few months after surgery. The skin is more sensitive and this could led to further scarring. Use a sunblock of at least 30 SPF (and both UVA and UVB) for protection when out in the sun for any extended length of time.
